The Excursions from The Athala

Wherever we landed, Kique had things to show us and share with us.   We also went along the shore in the dinghies to get close-up view of the rugged areas we would not otherwise see.  Below, we saw rays swimming under our dingy.

The lava fields took on interesting shapes.  Even in this hot, harsh environment, the lava cactus and small flowers mange to find a foothold and then survive.

On other islands the lava is red and it looks like we could be on Mars.  The spatter cones surround what looks like a red lake below.

We get to see the distinctive pinnacle rock on Bartolomé leaning toward the water from above and from the water.

The evenly spaced plants on this volcanic ash field are truly gray, which makes for an unearthly landscape.

<< Some islands have older, more crumbling lava.  These interesting lava tubes are formed when the surface cooled more quickly than the moving stream of lava beneath them.   Now the tubes provide shade for sea lions and other critters.

Then there are other islands or regions of islands that are bright green with growth--a land of contrasts.

We visited Post Office Bay on Floreana and stopped by this unique post office where people deposit mail in the barrel (with the roof) to be hand delivered by visitors who are going to be close to the recipients' locations.  We left off our postcards and some of us took mail to deliver.  Many folks have left their signs, general messages, and other flotsam & jetsam.   Above right, reading the addresses for all to hear.

We saw two types of crabs.  The gaudy sally lightfoot crabs plastered themselves all over the rocks near the water.  The shy hermit crab is not so obvious.
